It’s been nearly five years now since the final Harry Potter book was published, drawing to a close a literary phenomenon the likes of which the publishing world has rarely seen. Author J. K. Rowling’s boy wizard captured the hearts and the imaginations of readers young and old all over the world, while the ensuing Pottermania resulted in record global book sales. This incredible success transformed the notoriously publicity shy Rowling into both a household name, and a multi-millionaire.
When she finished writing the final Potter book Rowling announced that she’d be taking some well deserved time off to spend with her family, but that she planned to continue writing in the long term. So book lovers have spent the last couple of years hotly anticipating the publication of Rowling’s next offering.
It’s fair to say that the phenomenal success of Harry Potter was undoubtedly always going to be a hard act to follow. Though Rowling has apparently written several works in the years since the Deathly Hallows, it’s thought that the author has felt some pressure at the prospect of introducing a non-Potter story to her readers. Happily it seems that the wait will soon be over for Rowling fans however, as publishers Little, Brown & Co have today announced details of the upcoming Rowling novel due to be published in September this year.
“The Casual Vacancy” is to be the author’s first adult novel, and has been described as “very different” from the Potter series. The story is a black comedy set in a picturesque English village and will deal with the rivalries that ensue during a parish council election. The subject matter may be strikingly different to Rowling’s earlier works, but book retailers are predicting another best seller for the author. I for one will certainly be picking up a copy of the book come the 27th September. What about you?
