There’s a heated debate raging across the Internet this festive season. It turns out that some schools and nurseries are asking that parents pay an entrance fee to attend their little darlings’ nativity plays and christmas performances. The England Cricketer Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff tweeted that his daughter’s school were charging £4 a head to attend the school play.
Many parents are up in arms that they are being charged money to watch their angels tread the boards this Christmas, particularly considering the fact that many families are struggling in the current financial climate. Whereas it has been common practice for some years now to pass around a bucket for voluntary donations at Christmas functions, the charging of an entrance fee seems to have crossed the line for many parents.
On the other hand, thanks to government cuts our school budgets are being squeezed like never before. Perhaps there’s an argument for schools taking a more proactive role in fundraising? After all, is there anything more important than our children’s education?
So, what do you think about this hot topic? Are you being charged to attend the nativity this year? Do you think this is a fair move by schools, or a step too far?
