It’s pretty fair to say that some news was reported yesterday that subsequently almost sent the Interwebs into a meltdown as Twilight fans the world over reeled with shock. It transpires that, whilst vampire Edward Cullen and his lady love Bella’s tale ended with the requisite happy ever after, all is not quite so rosy in the real life romance between the two young actors who play them in the hugely successful Twilight film franchise.
It turns out that Bella a.k.a 22 year old Kristen Stewart has been caught cheating on Edward a.k.a Brit actor Robert Pattinson with a 41 year old married family man director Rupert Sanders. Yet another Brit, (seems Kristen may like the accent?) Sanders met the young actress when she was cast in the lead role of his first feature film, the recently released Snow White and the Huntsman.
It’s not known when the affair started, or how long it had been going on, but Stewart and Sanders were photographed in a series of steamy clinches during a drive together around LA on the 17th July. The photos were published yesterday in a US gossip magazine and news of the scandal went global within a matter of minutes.
Such a public misdemeanour does seem bizarrely out of character for the usually extremely guarded young actress, who has in the past admitted that she seriously struggles with the level of press attention on her private life. Ironically in fact, the apology that Ms Stewart released yesterday after the scandal broke is actually the first time she has publicly admitted to being in a relationship with Robert Pattinson although it’s thought that she and her handsome co-star have been dating for several years now.
It remains to be seen how Pattinson will handle these revelations, and the actor is unsurprisingly laying low for now. It must add extra levels of pressure on the shoulders of these two young actors that there is such public interest in their private relationship, but hordes of fervent Twilight fans the world over were extremely invested in seeing their favourite love story apparently brought to life. One thing’s for sure, it’s certainly going to make for some awkward moments when publicity begins ahead of the release of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 this November.
