Forty years after the cult musical first hit cinema screens, the stars of Cabaret have reunited once more to mark the anniversary at a star studded event in Los Angeles. As tends to be the way in Hollywood, Ms Minelli and other cast members didn’t appear to have aged overly much in the 40 years since the movie was filmed. Even the film itself has enjoyed something of a makeover, having been restored in a digitally remastered HD version in honour of its big birthday.
Before being brought to life on the silver screen in 1972, Cabaret was originally a Broadway musical inspired by a book written by renowned novelist Christopher Isherwood. The film tells the story of the life and loves of American singer Sally Bowles who performs at the seedy Kit Kat cabaret club in Berlin in the 1930s.
Bowles, played in the film version by Minelli, is famous for her fabulously striking looks and fun flapper costumes. In one of the most iconic scenes in the movie, Sally performs a racy dance routine with a chair whilst wearing a skimpy black outfit, black stockings and a bowler hat.
