Sherlock, a fantastic modern take on Conan Doyles classic

sherlockIs anyone else out there absolutely loving the new series of Sherlock? Benedict Cumberbatch is back on our screens as the genius detective in the second series of Stephen Moffat and Mark Gatiss’ reworking of the classic detective story. Writers Moffat (of Doctor Who fame) and Gatiss (who made his name in the League of Gentleman) have ensured that the basic elements of Conan Doyle’s classic are all in there but with a modern twist for the 21st century audience.

The new adaptation is set firmly in the modern day, with mobile phones and other technology playing a vital role in the storyline. Sherlock himself has had a makeover too. Gone is the pipe smoking, opium addicted Holmes of old. Instead this Sherlock attempts to battle his smoking habit with the aid of nicotine patches. Some things never change though. Cumberbatch’s Sherlock still relies on his trusty sidekick Dr Watson (Martin Freeman), but this time around the men are at least on first name terms.

Of course, no great story is complete without a truly worthy adversary. They don’t come much more devious that the devilish Moriarty, played with sinister charm by Irish actor Andrew Scott. Next week’s episode is entitled “The Reichenbach Fall”, a nod to the classic Conan Doyle story “The Final Problem” in which Holmes and Moriarty pitt their wits against each other in a thrilling battle to the death. We should be in for a treat!

We’re big fans of the great detective here at Party Domain, so we’ve been sure to stock up on plenty of Sherlock costume accessories. If you want to dress up as Sherlock, then you’ll definitely be needing a Detective Magnifying Glass, a Sherlock Holmes Pipe and of course the iconic Sherlock Holmes Hat. Elementary my dear customers!
