Surely one of the most successful cinema double-acts of recent years, actor Johnny Depp and director Tim Burton have combined their considerable talents once more on their latest film foray. Dark Shadows, which goes on general release in the UK on the 11th May, is an updated big screen re-imagining of the cult 70s gothic soap opera of the same name.
The fantasy comedy film tells the tale of Barnabas Collins, a wealthy playboy from the 1750s who is cursed by a vengeful witch for not returning her affections. The witch turns him into a vampire and then buries him alive in a coffin. Some 200 years later Barnabas is fortuitously released from his imprisonment to find life much altered.
On Barnabas’ unexpected return to life he is faced with a series of challenges to overcome. His family estate is in a shambles, his descendants bring new meaning to the term “dysfunctional”, and he’s got to deal with the culture shock of life in 1970s America. On top of all of this, the jealous witch who cursed him in the first place is still around and determined to be a thorn in his side.
We are rather large fans of Mr Depp here at Party Domain, and will definitely be heading to the cinema to check out his latest movie. Johnny has played a host of iconic and well-loved characters in his day, and many of them have gone on to inspire bestselling fancy dress outfits such as the Edward Scissorhands costume, the Jack Sparrow Pirate fancy dress costume and the Mad Hatter fancy dress costume. If Dark Shadows is as big a hit at the box office as it’s promising to be, we’re sure there’ll be a Barnabas Collins costume to add to the dressing up box before you know it!
