Retro is in, whilst what is considered as ‘retro’ changes as the years progress. The trend for retro fashions makes it a lot easier to put fancy dress outfits together, as you can incorporate what is readily available on the high street – just be careful not to look as though you’re wearing your everyday clothes!
Just like Calvin Harris, here at Party Domain we think a lot of things were not only acceptable in the 80s, but actually pretty great. If you yourself were a child of the 1980s, then you’ll absolutely love the opportunity to take the trip down memory lane for a themed party or night out. With the insurgence of 80s bars and clubs in town and city centres, dressing the part can make for an extremely fun night out.
While you may relish the opportunity to have a generic crazy perm, garish make up, double denim and geometric leggings, we also have plenty of fabulous and more unusual 80s costumes for you to choose from, embracing the very best of real 1980s culture.
80s Fancy Dress Outfits
Think back – what do you associate with the 80s besides bad hair and fashion? Great music, great movies and the introduction of video gaming into our lives. With this in mind, we’ve come up with some fantastic outfits, including the option of dressing up as Super Mario or Luigi. Complete with the blue jumpsuit, plus a green or red T-shirt and matching ‘M’ or ‘L cap, you’ll also get the typical Italian moustache that these loveable characters sported – unless of course you’ve got your own already!
Another popular 80s choice is always Michael Jackson, who had so many iconic looks. Choose from the world-famous red ‘Thriller’ jacket which really put him on the map or the classic black military jacket. Pair either of these with a single glove and trilby hat to complete the look. You could even recreate the ‘Smooth Criminal’ video with one of the outfits from our gangster selection.
From the King of Pop to the Queen of Pop, our Trash Madonna costume combines a red tartan mini skirt with a black basque. Alternatively, put together your own outfit using a ra-ra skirt, denim jacket and tie a big bow around your hair. Finish it off with lace gloves from our accessories section and a giant cross from the costume jewellery section. Even if you already have most of your 80s costume, whatever it may be, we’re sure you’ll find the missing pieces among our accessories.
Bringing it All Together
Having sorted out your costume, it’s time to complete the theme elsewhere. Go old school and send out paper invitations to your guests inviting them to the event or, if you prefer to use modern technology, make your invite sound 80s, using expressions of the time such as bodacious, psych, dude, or rad.
If you’re having the party at home, then try and incorporate your decorations and even your food into the mix. Lots of neon is the order of the day, and you could even print out your own posters of classic games such as Pac Man or Space Invaders.
