A phenomenon almost as rare as the appearance of Halley’s Comet took place in London yesterday…a Spice Girl’s reunion! All five former Spice Girls were back together again yesterday for the launch of Viva Forever, the new musical based on their song catalogue.
Posing for photographs on the staircase of the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel (the very same iconic staircase on which the girls filmed the very first Spice video way back in 1996) before facing the media at a press conference, the glamourous Spice ladies waxed lyrical about the show and each other.
However it doesn’t take a body language expert to spot that all is not exactly rosy in the Spice garden at present. Or, more specifically, Victoria Beckham aka Posh Spice is perhaps not the flavour of the month. The distance between VB and her former bandmates was blatant and Victoria ensured she spent the minimum amount of time with her ex-colleagues, arriving last and being the first to leave as she jetted straight back off to her home in LA.
Mrs Beckham is busy making a name for herself in the fashion world and, along with her famous footie player husband, is certainly the most financially successful of the former Spices. Rumours suggest that her refusal to take part was the reason that the girls were unable to take advantage of an invite to play at Queen’s Jubilee concert earlier this month. It appears the other Spices may not quite be ready to forgive Posh for denying them that opportunity.
Despite the apparent animosity amongst the girls themselves comic icon Jennifer Saunders, who leant her considerable writing talents to the stage play, will be hoping that Viva Forever proves to be a grand success along the lines of the Abba-themed Mamma Mia or Queen’s We Will Rock You. If it does succeed, you can bet your platform boots that we’ll see a resurgence in interest in Spice Girl themed fancy dress.
