Throwing a Perfect Masquerade Ball

Masquerade balls came into popularity in sixteenth century Italy. These elaborate events were extremely popular with the upper classes, giving them an opportunity to wear beautiful gowns and ornate eye masks while celebrating special occasions.

Traditional masquerade balls fell out of fashion around the eighteenth century. However, they have become popular today as a mysterious, fun and interesting theme for fancy dress parties and events. Here are some ideas for hosting a masquerade ball of your own:

- Venue
The venue that you choose for your masquerade ball is very important. It should reflect the opulent theme that these events traditionally had. This can be achieved with decorations if you can’t afford an expensive venue. Your venue should have plenty of room for dancing, and a place where guests can eat or drink.

- Theme
Not all masquerade balls are the same. There are several themes you can choose from when hosting your own ball. Your theme could be gothic, Venetian, medieval or Mardi Gras. The theme you select will help you in choosing your decorations, costumes and styles of mask.

- Costumes
Traditionally, guests wore very elaborate costumes to masquerade balls; detailed ball gowns and expensive suits. The dress code for your own ball is up to you but, whatever costume style your guests wear, they should all wear masquerade masks. Masks can be plain, or have elaborate details like lace, sequins or feathers. They can be attached to a stick and carried or worn around the head with elastic.
