Exciting news for telly viewers, the new series of Spartacus will be premiering on the goggle box in the USA next week, which means it should be hitting UK telly in the not too distant future. The Starz original series is a historical romp through the infamous tale of Spartacus, the former slave and gladiator who turned freedom fighter and fought against the Roman Empire.
The first series, chock full of stylised graphic scenes of bloody violence and explicit sex, proved to be a massive hit across the world. Sadly Andy Whitfield, the original Welsh-born lead actor taking on the role of Spartacus, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma shortly before a 2nd series was scheduled to begin production. The filming was postponed in order to give Andy time to recover, and instead a short prequel series was produced.
Eventually it became clear that unfortunately Andy Whitfield would not be able to return as Spartacus, so he courageously gave his blessing for Australian actor Liam McIntyre to be cast as his replacement and the 2nd series went into production in April 2011. Tragically Andy Whitfield lost his battle against cancer on September 11th last year.
The new series is entitled Spartacus: Vengeance and picks up where the first series left off, just as the slave revolt begins. Even with a new Spartacus in tow, the new season is bound to bring more of the drama, torment and liberal splashing of fake blood that we’ve come to know and love.
We’re rather large fans of Spartacus here at Party Domain, and if you’re big fans of the historical drama too then you’ll be sure to love the togatastic goodies in our awesome Roman Fancy Dress shop.
